Spending Summer in Aspen, Colorado: My Favorite Local Adventures

Over the past 4 years, I’ve been lucky enough to spend part of my summer in Aspen. As someone based in Texas, trading in 105-degree heat for Aspen’s perfect 85-degree summer weather feels like an absolute luxury. The cooler temps, crisp mountain air, and stunning alpine scenery make Aspen the perfect escape from the sweltering South.

Between work hours, I’ve had the chance to explore some of the best things Aspen has to offer—from scenic trails to laid-back local spots. If you’re planning a summer trip to Aspen, here are a few of my favorite activities that I highly recommend:

1. Rent an E-Bike and Explore Aspen on Two Wheels
One of the best ways to get around during summer in Aspen is on an electric bike. The family I’m working with lent me theirs, and it’s been a total game-changer. While I’m more familiar with traditional road bikes (shoutout to my Bianchi), Aspen’s steep hills call for a little boost—literally. E-bikes amplify your pedaling efforts and make longer rides more manageable, even at higher elevations.

If you need to rent one, I had a great experience at Ute City Cycles. The team is friendly, knowledgeable, and the pricing is fair (especially for Aspen standards). They’ll help get you set up with the right gear for your skill level and itinerary.

2. Cruise the Rio Grande Trail to Woody Creek Tavern
Once you’ve got your wheels, don’t miss the Rio Grande Trail, one of Aspen’s most accessible biking and walking paths. I recommend riding out to Woody Creek Tavern, a laid-back, local gem that feels worlds away from the glitz of Aspen’s downtown. The ride takes about 40 minutes from Red Mountain and is relatively flat—perfect for casual riders or anyone adjusting to the altitude.

3. Grab a Drink at Woody Creek Tavern
Hands-down my favorite spot in the area, Woody Creek Tavern is worth the ride. It’s about 20 minutes from downtown Aspen by car (or a bit longer by bike), and it has an unpretentious, welcoming vibe that’s hard to find in resort towns. A few years agao,I happened to visit the day photographer David Yarrow was shooting there—so you never know who you’ll run into. The drinks are well-priced (rare for Aspen), and the food hits the spot after a long ride.

4. Shop Local: Aspen’s Best Boutiques and Hidden Gems

No Aspen summer experience is complete without exploring its eclectic mix of high-end boutiques and unique local shops. Here are a few favorites:

  • ETC. Aspen – Located at 445 E Hopkins Ave, this boutique offers a curated selection of designer jewelry, accessories, and clothing. It's a must-visit for fashion enthusiasts seeking unique pieces.

  • Kemo Sabe – Situated at 217 S Galena St, Kemo Sabe is renowned for its handcrafted Western wear, including cowboy hats and boots. While the staff may focus on high-spending customers, it's worth a visit to admire their exquisite silver and leather items.

  • Nick Fouquet – At 520 E Hyman Ave, Nick Fouquet offers custom-made hats that blend classic craftsmanship with modern flair. Each piece is a work of art, perfect for those looking to make a statement.

  • Aviator Nation – Found at 308 S Mill St, this store captures the essence of 1970s California with its vintage-inspired hoodies, sweatpants, and tees. The vibrant atmosphere makes shopping here a fun experience.

  • Susie's Ltd. Consignments – Located at 600 E Main St, Susie's is a treasure trove for designer consignment finds. From high-end clothing to unique home goods, it's a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
