Met Gala 2025 Recap: “Superfine” Theme Celebrates Black Style & Dandyism
The 2025 Met Gala, held on May 5 at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, celebrated the theme Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, spotlighting the rich legacy and revolutionary spirit of Black dandyism—a movement that defies traditional fashion norms. The accompanying dress code, Tailored for You, invited attendees to creatively interpret the exhibition's emphasis on menswear and suiting.
Theme & Exhibition
Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion, the "Superfine" exhibition offers a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism. The exhibit delves into how Black individuals have used fashion as a form of self-expression, resistance, and identity.
Host Committee & Notable Attendees
Reviving a tradition not seen since 2019, the Met Gala featured a host committee comprising influential figures from various industries, including André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Simone Biles, Dapper Dan, and Doechii. The event also welcomed first-time attendees like NFL player Saquon Barkley and pianist Gina Alice Redlinger.
Best Dressed:
Doechii in Louis Vuitton
Probably my favorite look of the night! Doechii stunned in a custom Louis Vuitton tuxedo jacket with cape detail, checkerboard shorts, and a mahogany tie. Styled with a pussy-bow ribbon and micro Speedy bag, her look channeled Black dandyism.
André 3000 in Burberry
André 3000 turned heads at the 2025 Met Gala with a custom Burberry ensemble that combined avant-garde flair with cultural homage. His outfit featured a tailored suit adorned with a miniature grand piano on the back and a trash bag accessory, making a bold statement that blended fashion with artistic expression. This inventive look perfectly encapsulated the evening's theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, showcasing André's unique approach to style.
A$AP Rocky in AWGE
I mean…swoon. A$AP Rocky turned heads at the Met Gala 2025 in a custom AWGE ensemble, blending streetwear with formal tailoring. The outfit featured a reimagined double-breasted parka with technical wool, paired with a white poplin shirt, black trousers, and diamond accessories. Completing the look, he carried a diamond-covered umbrella, designed by Briony Raymond, sparking conversation due to its gun-like handle.
Charli XCX in Ann Demeulemeester
Charli XCX stunned in a gothic Ann Demeulemeester look with feathered accents and a sheer skirt, bringing dark drama to the Superfine theme.
Zendaya in Louis Vuitton
Who is surprised that Zendaya crushed? She returned to the Met Gala in a white flared Louis Vuitton pantsuit styled by Law Roach, complete with a sharp vest and tie. She topped the look with a dramatic Alexander McQueen 2007 hat, embracing Superfine’s theme with tailored elegance and archival flair.

Jennie (BLACKPINK) in Chanel
Jennie of BLACKPINK wowed at the Met Gala 2025 in a custom Chanel tuxedo gown. The off-the-shoulder black gown with a dramatic train was accessorized with layered pearls and a top hat, paying tribute to classic menswear and the legacy of Coco Chanel.
Madonna in Tom Ford
It’s giving Mob Boss. Madonna made a bold statement at the 2025 Met Gala, arriving with a cigar in hand and exuding her signature confidence. Her daring presence and unapologetic style perfectly aligned with the evening's theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
Lisa (BLACKPINK) in Louis Vuitton
Lisa wowed at the 2025 Met Gala in a sheer, beaded Louis Vuitton blazer paired with crystal-embellished underwear and monogrammed tights. A pearl chain belt and sleek updo completed her bold, fashion-forward look. The tailoring is there for the theme, but she’s on my best dressed list for the wow-factor!
Tracee Ellis Ross in Marc Jacobs
Tracee Ellis Ross stunned in a custom Marc Jacobs pink satin gown with an oversized bow and matching Stephen Jones hat. The look perfectly captured the Superfine theme, embodying Black dandyism with elegance. Love the color pops, playfulness, and obvious adherence to the theme.
Zoe Saldaña in Thom Browne
Zoe Saldaña impressed in a sculpted Thom Browne gown with sequined sleeves, a buttoned front, and a bold black corset. The graphic, tailored look aligned perfectly with the Superfine theme. She can do no wrong - stunning.
Bad Bunny in Prada
Admittedly, I love Bad Bunny so he would make best dressed in anything. He honored his Puerto Rican roots at the 2025 Met Gala in a custom brown Prada suit, accessorized with a traditional pava hat and crystal-studded gloves. His look seamlessly blended cultural homage with tailored elegance, perfectly aligning with the evening's theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

Sydney Sweeney in Miu Miu
Sydney Sweeney stunned in a custom black beaded Miu Miu gown inspired by Kim Novak’s The Legend of Lylah Clare. With a gold rosette neckline, fringe accents, and vintage Hollywood styling, her look elegantly echoed the Superfine theme. This one gave people pause, but I feel she looks great, love the baby hair nod, great tailoring…
Worst Dressed:
Lorde in Thom Browne
Lorde's silver Thom Browne ensemble—a bandeau top, layered maxi skirt, and draped suit jacket—felt unflattering and disjointed. The look lacked cohesion and missed the mark on the evening’s theme, falling short of the refined tailoring and elegance that defined the night.
Maya Hawke in Prada
Maya Hawke's Met Gala 2025 look—a pink ensemble with a sheer cape—felt underwhelming and disconnected from the evening's theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The outfit lacked the structured tailoring celebrated throughout the night, making it one of the less memorable appearances on the red carpet.
Deborah Roberts in Mark Ingram Atelier
Deborah Roberts’ black-and-white look with detached cuffs missed the mark, appearing disjointed and out of step with the Superfine theme.
Jessica Kayll
Jessica Kayll’s white mini skirt and cream jacket with floral embellishments lacked cohesion and didn’t align with the Superfine theme, making it one of the night’s more mismatched looks.
Heidi Klum in Vetements
Heidi Klum’s black Vetements gown with white print and a dramatic train felt boring and lacked the tailored sophistication expected for the Superfine theme, failing to stand out on the red carpet.
Zuri Hall in Bishme Cromartie
Zuri Hall’s custom Bishme Cromartie gown featured a strange mini suit detail on the front, which felt out of place. The black dress with vertical pinstripes lacked the sharp tailoring of the evening’s best looks and didn’t align with the Superfine theme.
Hildy Kuryk-Bernstein
Hildy Kuryk-Bernstein’s black suit with exaggerated ruffled lapels and a plunging neckline was not flattering.
Georgina Rodríguez
Georgina Rodríguez’s lace slip dress felt too casual for the Met Gala and missed the mark on the Superfine theme’s emphasis on sharp tailoring.
